HRT Does Not Equal Fat Loss

HRT Does Not Equal Fat Loss

One of the biggest misconceptions I’m seeing right now, especially with women in their 40s, 50s and beyond, is this idea that getting on HRT automatically means you’re going to start losing body fat.

It doesn’t work that way.

I’m all for getting your hormones checked. I believe bloodwork becomes increasingly important as we age, and if you have a legitimate hormone deficiency or medical issue, that needs to be evaluated and treated by a qualified healthcare professional.

But we need to stop confusing improving your hormonal environment with creating fat loss.

They are not the same thing.

HRT CAN SUPPORT FAT LOSS. IT DOESN’T CREATE IT.

Hormones can influence many of the things that affect your ability to execute a successful fat-loss program—energy, sleep, recovery, appetite, training performance and your ability to maintain muscle.

If something is clinically deficient and it's properly addressed, you may feel better. You may sleep better. You may recover better. You may train harder and more consistently.

All of that can make the fat-loss process easier to execute.

But HRT doesn't eliminate the need for the process.

You can have great hormone numbers and still gain body fat.

You can be on HRT and eat too many calories.

You can be on HRT and not eat enough protein.

You can be on HRT and barely resistance train.

And you can absolutely be on HRT and lose muscle if you crash your calories trying to get the scale down as quickly as possible.

HRT is a tool. It isn't the program.

SO WHAT ACTUALLY DRIVES FAT LOSS?

This is where we get back to the basics—and the basics still work.

STEP 1: KNOW WHERE YOU'RE STARTING

Before randomly cutting food, establish a baseline.

What are you currently eating? What does your bodyweight look like over several weeks? How active are you? How are you training? What does your body composition look like?

And for women experiencing symptoms that could be hormone-related, bloodwork and a medical evaluation may also be appropriate.

Don't guess. Get information first.

STEP 2: CREATE A CONTROLLED CALORIE DEFICIT

Fat loss requires your body to use stored energy over time.

That doesn't mean starving yourself.

One of the biggest mistakes I see women make is immediately dropping calories as low as possible. The goal isn't to see how little food you can survive on.

The goal is to create enough of a deficit to produce fat loss while still supporting your training, recovery and muscle tissue.

I want controlled progress—not a crash diet.

STEP 3: KEEP PROTEIN HIGH

When calories come down, preserving muscle becomes a priority.

Protein provides the amino acids needed to support muscle tissue, but eating protein alone isn't enough. It needs to be combined with resistance training.

Remember what we're trying to accomplish:

Lose BODY FAT while preserving as much MUSCLE as possible.

Those are two very different goals from simply "losing weight."

STEP 4: RESISTANCE TRAIN WITH A PURPOSE

If you're trying to change your body composition, give your body a reason to keep muscle.

That's resistance training.

I'm not talking about walking into the gym, going through the motions for 30 minutes and calling it a workout.

Your training needs structure, progression and appropriate intensity.

For women especially, I would rather see the focus shift away from constantly trying to become smaller and toward building and maintaining muscle while gradually reducing body fat.

Muscle changes the way your physique looks.

STEP 5: USE CARDIO AS A TOOL

Cardio can increase energy expenditure and improve cardiovascular fitness, but I don't want it replacing resistance training.

More cardio isn't automatically better.

Start with what is necessary. Monitor your progress. Increase activity when there's a reason to increase it.

Your steps, cardio, resistance training and nutrition should work together, not fight against each other.

STEP 6: PAY ATTENTION TO SLEEP AND RECOVERY

You can't talk about hormones, body composition and training without talking about recovery.

Poor sleep can affect appetite, energy, training performance and recovery. If you're exhausted all day, cravings are through the roof and your workouts are terrible, sticking to a structured program becomes much harder.

Sleep isn't exciting.

Neither is recovery.

But they're part of the process.

STEP 7: MEASURE, ADJUST AND BE PATIENT

This is the part people don't want to hear.

Fat loss takes time.

Track bodyweight trends. Take progress pictures. Look at measurements. Watch your gym performance. Monitor how your clothes fit.

Don't completely change the program because the scale didn't move for three days.

Give the plan enough time to tell you whether it's working, and then make small adjustments based on actual data.

WHERE HRT FITS INTO THE PICTURE

Think of it this way:

If you have a legitimate hormone deficiency, addressing that problem may improve the environment in which you're trying to get results.

But you still have to provide the stimulus.

You still have to train.

You still have to eat according to your goal.

You still have to get enough protein.

You still have to manage your total calories.

You still have to recover.

And you still have to stay consistent long enough for your body to change.

That's why I don't want women looking at HRT as a fat burner or a shortcut.

HRT can SUPPORT the process.
HRT is NOT the process.

THE J.M. COACHING APPROACH

Especially after 40, I don't believe in throwing random diets, excessive cardio or another trendy protocol at the problem.

I want to know what's actually happening first.

Then we build the nutrition around the individual. We build the training around their ability and goals. We monitor progress. We make adjustments when the data tells us to—not because we're impatient.

If hormones need medical attention, that conversation belongs between you and a qualified healthcare professional.

Then we build the training and nutrition around the goal.

Because at the end of the day, you don't replace the fundamentals with hormones. You put the fundamentals in place first and address hormones appropriately alongside them.

READY TO STOP GUESSING?

If you're over 40 and you're tired of jumping from diet to diet, adding more cardio and wondering why your body isn't responding, J.M. Coaching can help you put the pieces together.

Training. Nutrition. Structure. Accountability.

No shortcuts. No magic protocol.

Just a plan built around you, your starting point and your goal.
